Thoughts of Christmas

I don't particularly like holidays, excluding getting time off from work of course. Growing up Christmas was one of my most favorite times of the year. But now that I have gotten older I don't enjoy Christmas as much as I used to. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing my kids get really excited when they open the presents and the experience of them giving gifts to others is very worthwhile.

This year we had our son Mason's Tonsils/Adenoids removed on Dec 23, two days before Christmas. We thought that he could recover during the School Christmas break and be back to 100% when school got started next year. Mason has had severely swollen & inflamed tonsils most of his life, so it needed to happen sometime. Well I feel bad because he didn't get to visit family or really go anywhere during Christmas because of the side effects of his pain meds. He was severely nauseated and miserable.

He is beginning to feel a little better now, but it was a tough stretch there for a while.

So when Mason grows older and when people ask him what was his most memorable Christmas, he will probably say, "Well it would have been the Christmas in 2008. Because that was when my parents thought it would be a good idea to have my tonsils/adenoids removed 2 days before Christmas. I was completely miserable that Christmas. What were they thinking?!?"

So I offer my deepest apology to you Mason. I hope that someday you can forgive me.

No AFL in 2009

It was reported recently that the Arena Football League has suspended the 2009 season.

I have been a fan of the Utah Blaze since it's inception in 2006. I have attended most of their home games and I have even attended a few road games including a road playoff game.

I have conducted interviews of players, coaches & management. I have attended every single fan fest/meeting that the Utah Blaze have offered. I even attended the funeral services of Justin Skaggs (prominent player for the Blaze) and donated money to his children and conversed with Justin's younger brother Dusty. I even won a KSL contest to actually physically practice with the team. (That was really fun & a bit humiliating)

So as a huge Utah Blaze fan I am saddened by the cancellation of the 2009 season. I am of course sad that I won't get to see any Arena Football next year, but I am very concerned that the AFL may not return at all. The owner of the Utah Blaze is one of the Garff's, you know from all those Car Dealerships?

Well I have strong doubts that the AFL and the Blaze will be able to sucessfully rebound from a lack of a '09 season.

I still have hopes, but I don't expect much, in fact I expect the end of the AFL. My heart goes out to those players & coaches that now longer have employment.

My review of "24 - Redemption"

I did watch the 2 hour premiere of 24-Redemption and of course I enjoyed it! But to be fair I will break it down into likes & dislikes about the prequel to Season 7. (Warning: may contain spoilers)

Likes:
1) Jack Bauer showed he has a heart by giving up everything and serving a third world school.
2) I enjoyed seeing Jack make emotional connections with the boys. (As a 24 enthusiast, sometimes I begin to wonder if Jack Bauer is simply a robot with no emotions at all.)
3) I liked that the storyline wasn't the usual 'save the world in 24 hours' type of storyline.
4) At the end, Jack again did what was necessary and once again sacrificed himself to the better cause. What a stud!

Dis-likes:
1) It didn't give much of a review of back story, not that I need one, but for those who are tuning into 24 for the first time that would have been kinda nice.
2) I hated the fact that his friend, the guy who started the school and provided a hiding place for Jack, had to die. But that wasn't unexpected, this is 24 after all.
3) I did like seeing scenes that were leading up to something big involving a corrupt politician.
4) Kinda nice to see a female president, but even better than is it looks like shes isn't a corrupt president, I don't think I could handle that again.

Overall I would give 'Redemption' 3 out of 4 stars.

But I admit when I watched the long preview for the upcoming season I got really excited! Jack goes on trial for torturing a suspect to get information. And it looks like there will be no more CTU. But it looks like Cloe is back. And best of all Tony Almeda is making a return, but this time as the villain! How freakin awesome is that!

Here is the 2 min trailer:

Admitting Fault

I find it rather interesting why people will refuse to be wrong or at fault. Why? As far as I know everyone makes mistakes so is it too difficult to admit fault once and a while? Nothing gets to me more than someone who is blatantly wrong and refuses to admit fault and ask for forgiveness (ie. G.W. Bush).

The reason I am ranting about this now is because I have been more aware of my previous inability to admit fault. In my marriage I have gone to great lengths to prove my point even if I realized in the conversation that I was wrong. My ego & pride get in the way all too often. My wife is way to good of a person to have to deal with someone who won't admit to his mistakes and try to make them right. She has forgiven me each time I have admitted fault, which is a credit to her.

I have taken a more active role to admit when I have been wrong. It sucks at first, but the end result has been rather positive. I have even been proven wrong by my kids! It has been an eye opener and I have enjoyed it.

So here is my 2 cents: In a discussion, if someone gives you a conflicting view or opinion, don't try to correct them immediately or prove them wrong. Swallow your ego a little and try saying, "You could be right & I'll have to consider that." And watch what happens. It's definitely helps my relationships.

Utah Fan or BYU Hater?

As many of you already know, I am in fact a Utah Fan. As a Utah Fan I am often torn with the dilemma of fitting into one of two different camps. (1) Utah Fan, and/or (2) BYU Hater. I know, I know they one in the same most of the time, but most fit in one or the other.

Most of those who know me see me as a BYU hater. And I'll admit it, I hate them, much like I hate phone solicitors. I live in Utah County, so I have to deal with these freakin idiots all day everyday. I will admit that BYU fan makes my life miserable, so I do hate BYU fan more than I hate the actual team. Problem is that when BYU wins, BYU fan is gloating and strutting his stuff. But when they lose, they get a big piece of humble pie, courtesy of yours truly.

This year is turning out to be a big year for the Utes. Currently we are 8-0 and the cougs are 7-1. Our next game is TCU this Thursday night at home. TCU is very, very good and I do hope that we can handle them and play our best.

I apologize for the sports update, but I just had to.

BYU Sucks.

Good TV & Bad TV

In the last few years I have turned from a avid movie goer to a TV guy. I will admit DVR had a lot to do with my conversion, but there have been some really good TV shows out there. Until lately. Here is a small list (in no particular order) of what I have set on my DVR currently:

>24
Plain & Simple, Best show on TV period. This is the kind of show that got me to actually buy the first 2 seasons on DVD for $50 bucks each. If you haven't watched it, call me & I'll let you borrow my DVD's. Jack Bauer is my hero, I even named my blog after one of his more used phrases.

>The Mentalist
Detective/Cop show, but the cool part is that he is a former Physic & mind reader that helps the police solves crimes. I am digging this show, it is well written.

>CSI
Not NY or Miami the Las Vegas one, the original. I have liked this show for a long time. I still like it, but this season is bittersweet because Grissom is leaving the show this season & Morpheus, is taking over. Mind you I like Morphous its just that he is no Grissom.

>The Office
Probably the best sitcom comedy out there right now. This show is very original and funny. Dwight is awesome!

>Root of all Evil
This is Lewis Black's show on Comedy Central. He is the Judge and he has two random comedians play laywers debating various topics. It makes me laugh!

>Fringe
This show is kinda like X-files but better. I am liking it so far, but I don't think our relationship will last. JJ is one of the creators & contributors of this show, so I think this show will eat itself sooner than later all because JJ is a black hole.

>Mythbusters
Incredibly entertaining & educational. My kids even love it!

>Phineas & Ferb
This is a cartoon on the Disney Channel, my daughter asked me to watch it with her one night and I did and I thought is was great. I even laughed out loud a couple times. You should really give this show a shot!

>Judge Judy
All around great show, it builds my self-esteem by seeing pathetic losers get verbally assaulted by a grandma with something few of us have...Common Sense.

>Gary Unmarried
New sitcom comedy with Jay Mohr. I like Jay Mohr so I like this show, it may wear me down, but I'm liking it for now.

>My own worst enemy
This is a new show and has been super-hyped, so I have been giving it a shot. Christan Slater is the main dude and it has a Fight Club feel to the show. Its not too bad, not great, but not bad.

>Transformers Animated
It's Transformers, duh!

>Lost
This show started good and has begun to suck since season 2. I even cancelled it from my DVR list. Thanks for screwing up another good show JJ.

Sarah Palin

I just have to vent about this woman/Tina Fey look alike.

Here's the deal. I originally wanted to vote for McCain and when he added Palin, I thought, "Nice, done deal!". Uh, since then McCain & Palin have been doing their best to push my vote into Obama's box.

Then I saw her interviewed on ABC by Chuck Gibby. What was that?!? She is a mess.

Then I saw her interviewed on CBS by Kathy Kouric. Even better...The foreign policy is my personal favorite.

Now she is surrounded by 'Troopergate' and the investigation showed that she acted improperly.

It was also reported recently that she charged Alaska for her children to travel with her, even for entertainment purposes.

The republican party has spent over $150,000 on her wardrobe, makeup and whatever else makes her look like Tina Fey.

If you haven't seen McCain in the last few debates, chances are you may still vote for McCain, but if you did see that old dude fumble around the issues with no good, sensible plan for the economy or health care then you know that Obama is a better pres because Obama & his VP aren't trying to sabatoge his own campaign like McCain & Palin seem to be doing.

Ralph Nader 4 President!

Music

Anyone who knows me knows that music is big in my life. Most that know this also know that I like music that is usually hard and good (they go hand in hand...you know what I mean?). Well I recently put up a playlist on my blog. Well just to let you know what is on my playlist currently is what I am listening to currently as well. You know, to keep you updated.

I just couldn't help myself in thinking...dude, wouldn't it be cool if those thousands of people that are reading my blog could rock out while they are becoming 'tommy' educated.

So you know are given my official permission to nod your head to the beat while spending time here.

Rock on.

Freakin Furnace

While I do admit that this last week or so has been pretty awesome with the birth of Amber, but I would like to take a minute to vent just a little. My furnace quit working, now I don't know anything about furnaces but I had my Father-In-Law come up and we gave it a good look and tried to figure out what was the problem. Well at first the furnace didn't start up at all, then the pilot light wouldn't stay lit. So we decided that I should call a "professional". The "professional" said that my furnace could be fixed but it would probably cost me half as much as a new furnace would cost. So he recommended a replacement, then charged me $75 because he "looked" at my furnace.

So we decided to get as many estimates as we could so that we could get the best deal out there. We also decided that this would be the opportune time to get central air as well. So this post is my attempt to give a summary of what I have learned up to now, so be forewarned: this could possibly be valuable information for you or could potentially bore you to death.

I wasn't completely aware of exactly how many estimates we originally had done, but in making this summary it looks like we looked at 8 different companies. So here is my final analysis, ranked in order of priced bids:

1. Comfort Zone
This company is located up in Salt Lake but does some work down in Utah County. The guy we are working with is Wayne. My buddy referred him and they gave by far and away the lowest bid along with a very good warranty, service, excellent brand names and an excellent reputation. They have many great customer reviews. Long story short, this is the company we are going with and highly recommend.

2. Mountain Aire
This company gave a very good overall price bid, but they seemed a bit unreliable and uncertain and they aren't registered with BBB.org. Their company also seemed a bit sketchy as well, I couldn't find any major complaints or problems, but something didn't seem quite right. We seriously considered them anyway, but I am very glad that a better company out bid them.

3. Doctor Air
The guy we worked with was Brian. He was the guy we called first and he was the guy who gave us the original breakdown of the cost of repairing our existing furnace. He gave us a very good overall price bid for a new replacement. He even called later and said that if we got any lower bids that he would try to negotiate his price down or he would throw in some extra things at no cost to us. His company is relatively new, but he is registered with BBB.org. I would definitely recommend calling him for an estimate.

4. PPM
This company I have had out to so some minor pluming repair work and they have tuned up and gave the green sticker to my furnace in the past. I originally wanted to call them first because I haven't had any bad experiences with them. So when he came to give an estimate I was anxious to hear what they could offer. They gave a very reasonable offer, it wasn't the cheapest and definitely wasn't the most expensive either. They have good products(York), great service and a good warranty. Their company has been around for over 11 years and they have a very good reputation. I would have went with them if Comfort Zone didn't beat their overall price by $1000.

5. Absolute Air
This company is the only one partnered with Home Depot in Utah County so you know they are a relatively good and reliable company. They actually gave a reasonable estimate, but it was only an average price bid. The sales guy was very pushy, but was nice enough.

6. The Heating & Cooling guys
This company is relatively new as well. No major complaints or problems that I could see just that their estimate was a little above average. Overall, the sales guy seemed uninterested, I wasn't impressed at all.

7. Service Experts
This company is a highly respected company and they have been around for a long time. Here is my summary of this company. The sales guy was extremely long winded and didn't seem to want to leave for some reason. They gave the second highest bid which was $2200 higher than the previously highest bid. They only work with Lennox products, which are great products, but no other good options. I don't recommend this company unless you have time & money to burn.

8. Whipple
Dude, I can't wait to tell you about this one! The original reason we called this company is because we got a ad from them in the mail that said that they are giving free furnaces with the purchase of an Air Conditioner unit. I felt that maybe it was a "sign" that we got this ad when we needed one and I didn't want to find out later that we could have saved an additional $2000 if we would have gotten an estimate from them. The sales guy (Jason) spend an hour and a half at my house, telling me how awesome his company is. After all of the wasted time he gave me the highest bid of all, over $10,000. But he did offer the promotional deal in the ad, so he knocked off $2200. That meant the price was still way over $8000! Their company has been around for over 50 years, but who cares if ultimately they are just in business to try to break the world record for overcharging?!? Who do these people think they are anyway! Who are they working for?!?

Any of you have any good or bad experiences with furnaces or AC?

Amber & Mom made it home

It is really good to have Mom & Amber home!

But I have been getting multiple requests for a few more photos.

So here you go.

She and mommy are doing great!

What a cutie!

24

24 is back...Well in a little over a month it will be. I am a huge 24 fan! The only reason I am still an American is because Jack Bauer saved my country countless times from all those terrorists. Without him we would all be dead from either a nuclear bomb, biological weapon, atomic weapon, chemical weapon & a dead president or two.

I have been following 24 rather closely lately because I am in 24 rehab this year because they postponed it a year because of the writers strike. Well they made a 24 standalone movie that was originally intended to hit the theaters in the holiday season. Well they just announced that they are instead releasing it via television as a 2 hour event this November. The TV version will be somewhat edited because of the ads, but then they will be releasing the DVD with the full version soon after.

So to thank Jack Bauer for saving all of our lives time and time again the least you could do in return is watch his show and buy his DVD.

Can I borrow a towel?

The following story is a true story containing real events. The persons named in this story have NOT been changed. I repeat, this REALLY happened. Dude…I'm not even joking.

Brian the mailman was delivering his route like any other day. It was a nice warm, but cloudy afternoon and Brian was delivering a street that required him to walk to each house. The area he was delivering at was approximately 1.5 miles from his own home. While delivering Brian began to notice that something was wrong, very wrong. What could be wrong you ask? Deliver the wrong mail to the wrong house you may ask? Nope.

Well he began to feel sick, really sick. He began to panic...as one might do when they realize trouble is at hand. Apparently pressure began to build, intense pressure, the kind of pressure that isn't just in one isolated area. To this day no one really knows what was going through his mind at this point so all we have is the evidence of what happened. The evidence shows that what he did was try to continue to deliver his route with this increasing pressure. Well it wasn't long before he realized that he needed to do something and something quick. We have no evidence of him even attempting to drive to the nearest bathroom, or even to his own home in fact. What did he do then you ask? Well it seems that he opted to use the bathroom in his pants and puke down the front of his shirt.

What he did next is telling. Evidence shows us that he laid himself down on someone’s front yard and rolled around a bit, I assume in either pain or embarrassment, maybe? He then called his postal supervisor and said that he needed help and a change of clothes. Before the supervisor came, Brian got up and knocked on the door of the house and asked the resident if he could borrow a towel. They did in fact give him a towel. So it seems that he did in fact find no embarrassment whatsoever in the act of simply asking a random stranger for a towel while soiled in one’s own poop and vomit. There is a lack of evidence as to the reaction of the residents, but I'm sure it's not too difficult to imagine.

Where is his dignity you ask? What I can make of the situation, his dignity was gone as soon as he made the decision to release into his pants, but it could have been much sooner than that, only God really knows.

The supervisor finally came to get an eye and nose full of the incident. The supervisor pulled out a extra rain jacket and laid it on the back seat so the 'victim' could sit in his car. He then drove Brian to his home and let him stay home for the remainder of the day.

Moral of the story: When you feel immense pressure to either throw up or from a bad case of diarrhea, move your butt immediately to the nearest bathroom and more importantly, don't poo your pants. And for heaven sakes, don't ask a random stranger for a towel to clean yourself!

My Bike Crash

I feel like I should take a minute and give a recap of my bike accident from a few weeks ago. First off, it wasn't a big deal. No broken bones more of a bruised ego than anything. Here is a list with a few accompanying photos of my injuries.
  1. Minor concussion
  2. Bruising & scrapes on face (I got a black eye out of it!)
  3. Road rash on shoulder, elbow and hands
  4. Bruised ribs
My bike is a piece of crap. My chain slipped off, and I went head over.
End of story.

And no, I wasn't wearing a helmet. No worries, I will be wearing one from now on, even though it wouldn't have saved me from any of my injuries in the slightest.

*injury update:
I have pretty much had a full recovery, with the exception of a few awesome scars. I still have yet to fix or ride that piece of crap bike yet. Anyone want a bike?...come pick it up and its yours.

Obituary

You will need to click on the scan to read it.

The saddest obituary I have ever read.

Why do I get the feeling that this same thing will be said in my obituary?

My Kids

This one is still going to be more serious, but I'm still going to through in some funny so watch for it.

I currently have 2 kids:
Brylee who is 9 (soon to be 10)!
Mason who is 6!

Not to sound too bias, but they are great kids!

Not to mention that they are both getting a little sister very soon.

If you look closely at the picture you can see the rodent that pee'd all over my leg today because I gave her a bath. Doesn't she look innocent? Makes me want to get a dog and I hate dogs.

New baby girl on the way

We are less that a month away from the addition of a baby girl into our little family.

I just put up a baby countdown on my blog. Time is really moving!

Kristina & the baby's heath have been good thus far. Kristina's feet are quite swollen and she has begun to experience some light contractions here and there.

Still no name has been chosen. Any suggestions??

World Tour Vs. Rockband 2

Well for those of you who know me know that I am a huge music fan. So I was one of the first people that bought the game RockBand when it first came out. It was true love at first play.

Well, coming late this October we will have a true battle for the music fans...Rockband 2 & Guitar Hero World Tour.

To tell you the truth I haven't yet decided which I am going to purchase. I love Rockband, they are a solid company and I feel obligated to stick with them.

On the other hand, Guitar Hero World Tour is pretty enticing and they have the entire Metallica - Death Magnetic album to download!

Lets compare...Shall we?

Rockband 2
  1. Instruments like the guitar (besides the fire color) & microphone about the same, except the drums now have velocity ability (sounds louder when hit harder) and are a bit quieter and may have the ability to add additional cymbals.
  2. All new track list! That looks awesome!
  3. They plan on releasing additional downloadable songs every week!
  4. You can play previous downloaded songs from the original RockBand!
Guitar Hero World Tour
  1. Instruments: Guitar has an optional touch fret (no need to strum), a regular mic, and a really cool drum set up.
  2. The drum kit looks great, has 2 cymbals and 3 pads with pedal. They claim to have had input on the design from the drummers from Red Hot Chili Peppers & Blink 182.
  3. You can create your own songs in World Tour!
  4. Comes with a pretty sweet track list!
So as you can see... tough decision.

Oh and if you have an extra $300 laying around and want to upgrade your Rockband drums, you now have the option to buy an offical electronic drum kit that is built for the Rockband game.

But here is some good news that may help both you and me in this tough decision. It looks as if the instruments may be compatible with the other! Let me explain it this way...There may not be a need to buy 2 sets of instruments if you were wanting to play both games. According to Wired Magazine it looks like the instruments will be compatible with each other...At least for the PS3. I haven't heard about the Xbox or Wii yet.

I will let you know what my decision is when the time comes.

Keep me in your prayers during this tough time.

I hate first entries

I'm simply getting this out of the way.

This is my first post on my blog....

Whew! That was much harder than it looks.
